President Obama: We Don't Want Gitmo Detainees
Posted on 24 December 2015
Truly yours, Colorado.Forty-one Colorado Sheriffs signed a letter to President Obama asking him to reconsider the transition of Guantanamo detainees to the Supermax prison in Florence, Colorado. As a Colorado small business and veteran, I join their concern.
The opposition will state that we already have the Unabomber, Moussaoui, and many other high profile terrorists. What are a few more? Well, I'll tell you. A concentrated cadre of Al-Qaeda leadership that could potentially be a target for military operations.
The type of violence seen in Paris could come to America. In fact, I firmly believe that these types of operations are already in planning, and probably several have been stopped by law enforcement in the planning stage. Many veterans I have spoken with are not surprised in the least at the scope of the Paris attacks. We've been expecting this type of violence for more than a decade.
ISIS has conducted several prison breakouts in the past. In July 2012, a prison in Tikrit was assaulted and close to 100 inmates broken out. Of these, 47 were on death row. Several smaller breakouts occurred up to when ISIS hit Abu Ghraib outside of Baghdad in June 2013, freeing more than 1,500 enemy combatants.
I'm not an alarmist, and really not one to bang the war drums. But bringing a contingent of high level AQ leaders to one spot in Colorado is a risk that we need not take. There is no reason to transfer enemy combatants from a secure military prison, to a civilian one.
I highly doubt that a prison attack the scale of Mosul or Abu Ghrain will happen here. But all it takes is a dozen well-armed and well trained men, a VBIED, and the will to make it happen.
Keep Gitmo detainees out of Colorado, please.
